Our approach...
01 Competitive Analysis
Design and research team collaborated to analyze how competitors like LinkedIn, Facebook, Trevor Space, Asexual Network, Strong Family Alliance and QChatSpace implement features similar to SPI’s platform. The process of our Competitive Analysis was:
1) Feature Analysis:
Authentication
Onboarding
Profile
Timeline
Report Feature
Quick Exit
Groups
Moderation
Filters & Tags
Resources & Pin
Educational Content
2) SWOT Analysis:
Strength
Weakness
Opportunities
Threats
3) Affinity Mapping:
Both analyses provided data that reveal gaps that could benefit TDA Connect. The data was divided into Insights & Opportunity, which would help the team define the insights for the product’s features.
The team highlighted actionable insights around safety features, information architecture, and user onboarding.

The image shows one example of countless ideas we got from the analysis.

Research Plan
Context

The Dream Academy (TDA) is a 10-week online immersive course designed to help the lives of LGBTQIA+ and single mother refugees. SPI helps marginalized refugees in South Africa, Kenya, Uganda, Greece, Botswana, Angola and Morroco.

Pain Points

- High drop rates
- Difficulty in making the graduates connected.

Target Audience

- The Dream Academy students
- The Dream Academy mentors/leaders
- The Dream Academy Directory

Methodology

Study 1:
Interview & Usability Test w/ leaders (40min)
Study 2:
Unmoderated tests w/ students
Study 3:
Survey w/ TDA students/leaders/directory.

Timeline

Study 1: 2-4 weeks
Study 2: 1 week
Study 3: 1 week

02 Testing Prep Work
We divided phase 2 into 3 parts:
1. Interview questions brainstorm
2. Moderated Tests preparation
3. Unmoderated Tests preparation
03 Insight Interpretation
After finishing the studies we analyzed the insights and started to adding priorities to decide which insight should be priority

Through our research we analyzed over almost 20 issues that will improve the product

We analyzed each issue and organized them according to their impactful they are.
1 = most critical (can break the whole system), 2 = major, 3 = minor, 4 = least critical/nice to have

Example of a issue we need to fix asap.
Implementation
I collaborated with the design team to implement the report feature insights into the high-fi prototypes. We tested older report features versions and evaluated the new version

Using the agile methodology, as the sprints happened we were constantly testing and changing the prototypes according to the feedback.
04 Deliverables
Alongside design the research team shaped the MVP for Safe Place International(SPI)

The project is halfway done as future sprints will focus on refining and developing the platform. However, the phase 1 research team focused in aligning the expectations of the stakeholders to what is possible to create and guide them into success.

One moment that highlights the impact of research was when we tested the report feature, the more we tested and interviewed users and stakeholders we found that their needs were different. Since I was in charge of the feature, I focused in communicating to stakeholders what their users expect and help them review the feature's effectiveness for future version.
"“I’m blown away by what all of you have created. It’s going to be such a gift and such a big impact in the life of the community….This is like the key to what we were looking for all this while. Our WhatsApp groups are like maxed out at 400 and we have about 750 students and everyone’s posting pictures and asking and sharing stories. Having this platform where each and every person will have access to it and would get to see all the amazing things that people are telling them or sharing with them. Wow. I am just, I’m telling you, I have goosebumps and I’m blown away by everything that all of you have shared. Thank you, thank you, thank you!”"
